In search of Atlantis

Whale watching itinerary aboard a motor boat in search of whales and dolphins

Our “Whale watching” itinerary offers the chance of exciting encounters with mammals populating the renowned “Cetaceans Sanctuary “.

Whole day excursion

18,000 years ago, sea level was about 120 meters lower; at that time the Island of Elba and Pianosa were part of a vast promontory extended north up to nearly the current Capraia Island and south in the direction of Montecristo. Subsequently, following the last thaw, sea levels have risen up to the current one, submerging a good part of this promontory. Rising of sea levels, also formed the Archipelago as we know it today. Between the vast area that once extended southward for about 70 Km and the present Elba, only a patch of rough land remained over water, later named Scoglio d’Africa. About 10 Km ahead of it, there is also a wide shoal called “Sommiti”, which goes from -50 to – 6 meters above sea level. Our Atlantis. A unique place, isolated from the rest of the world (more than 50 Km from Elba), where enjoy a wonderful experience, equipped with only a scuba mask and fins to discover its beautiful seabed. While sailing to get there, you become amazed by the magic of colours below: the dark blue sea suddenly turns emerald green. After stopping for a swim, we finally reach Scoglio d’ Africa (also known as Africhella), a relatively small area as large as 2 tennis courts, with its own lighthouse for night-time signaling. Here again, a dip with our scuba mask is a must.

Program

Departure at 9am from the Island of Elba and arrival in the area after about 2 hours of navigation. Stop for a swim, arrival at Scoglio d’ Africa around lunchtime. Return at about 6pm
