Discover in the company of skilled local environmental guides the most beautiful and fascinating locations of these two islands.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Elba is the largest and most varied island of the Tuscan Archipelago, with a scrubland low at times and shrubby at others, its landscape and vegetation change constantly: from steppe to garrigue, from holm oaks and chestnut trees groves to alders covering wide ditches; from red iron mountains on the eastern side of the island to the imposing granite massif of Mount Capanne, whose peak dominates the whole Tuscan Archipelago. Its mineralogical wealth and geology are known pretty much worldwide and are often subject of studies carried out by Earth Sciences Universities. The variety of local habitats is incredible if compared to the actual size of its territory, so is also Elba\u2019s historical relevance in the Mediterranean context.
\nPianosa is the closest island to Elba: completely flat, bright, with white rocks enhancing its blue sea transparency and fields not longer cultivated, now covered by flowers and fragrant brush. An island with a mysterious past, an archaeological heritage made of prehistoric burials, catacomb structures, Neolithic caves, zoological and vegetable remains from very ancient times, all evidences stating a significant and constant presence of animals and humans. Furthermore, \u201dBagni di Agrippa\u201d, fish farming ponds as well as remains of Roman buildings and various infrastructures, tell us tales of a relevant establishment of Roman communities. Not to mention, much later, a chapter as Italy\u2019s first agricultural penal colony followed by the years as a maximum security prison, eventually shut down for good.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1497519860125{padding-top: 15px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Trekking on Elba and Pianosa – program:<\/h4>\n

Departing from Marina di Campo harbour, about an hour later we are ready to disembark at Pianosa. After a brief visit to its uninhabited old village, we enter the former agricultural penal colony, now a national park protected area, then walk past the “Dalla Chiesa\u201d wall amidst abandoned structures and cultivations; it is pretty common to come across the many partridges and pheasants populating this area, they were, in fact, introduced onto the island over two centuries ago when Pianosa was a private hunting reserve belonging to the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Walking surrounded by beautiful dry stone walls typical of the island, we reach \u2018Marchese\u2019 fort branch, a refined building built on the island northern edge, that over the years, has been a setting for multiple purposes; below us the beautiful bay of Porto Romano, whose crystalline waters are enhanced by friable white rocks delimiting the land end.
\nWhile heading south again along the west coast, we stop by Gulf della Botte to visit the ancient wash houses and Roman aqueduct. Our excursion continues along the beautiful Pianosa coast, enliven by numerous sea birds, including European shags, Herring gulls, and Scopoli’ s shearwaters ; around us intense Mediterranean scrub scents; while a complete lack of relief gives us the impression of being able to reach the other islands just by walking. After visiting the remains of Villa Romana di Agrippa, we conclude our excursion on Cala Giovanna beach, the only Pianosa shore where bathing is allowed.
\nReturn to Elba, dinner, overnight stay.<\/p>\n

Day 3: The Roman columns<\/h5>\n

Starting from the town of San Piero (230 meters above sea level) after about half an hour’s walk we stop at the still active granite quarries; we continue surrounded by the blooms of the Mediterranean scrub to the old water mill of Moncione (366 meters above sea level) where a time the wheat was ground.
\nAlong a panoramic path facing south, we arrive at one of the most interesting archaeological sites of the Tuscan archipelago: the ancient granite quarries of the Roman era, where we will reconstruct together the working methods of the ancient stonemasons, observing the extraction blocks and the numerous columns , between those simply blanked and those reached by capitals, some of which are up to 12 meters long. We continue along a path once surrounded by vineyards to the Vallebuia ditch and then reach the sea through the village of Seccheto.
