On arriving on the summit we can perfectly understand the shape of Elba: its big head to the west, the fins made from Campo, Lacona and Margidore gulfs and the tail made from Calamita and Cavo coast. To sum it up: a beautiful fish! From Monte Cappane’s more than 1000 metres we can see all the Tuscan Arcipelago. The show is guaranteed. Our decent begins immediately on the “flakes” of granite which form the final 200 metres of the mountain. After this panoramic part, the path enters a luxurious wood of more than one-hundred-year-old chestnut trees. We stop when we get to about 550 metres above sea level to look at the Saint Cerbone hermitage, built in about 1400 by friars in honour of the saint who many centuries before lived in a cave nearby. From here we take a forestry path which brings us back to our starting point, Marciana, in 40 minutes. | Route DOWNHILL HIKING: Marciana - Capanne - San Cerbone - Marciana Distance: 6 km Time: 4 hours Difficulty: easy Interesse: historical, naturalistic, panoramic
