Vertical hiking 0-1000-0.
The Island of Elba from the sea to its summit to the sea.
A very difficult excursion with a steep hike from the sea to the highest pinnacle on the Island of Elba (1019 m) to admire the view over all of Elba and the Tuscan Archipelago and then down to the sea again.
As the name of the excursion suggests you will face a height difference of 1 km. Elba is a unique place to challenge yourself at this level, in fact we leave directly from the sea to arrive at the top of the peak of Mount Capanne 1019 m asl. Let’s be clear, we do not run with a stopwatch, but for the joy of doing so. Our itineraries cross places of unequalled beauty; we run over ground where we find traces of people from long ago, who escaped from pirates over these heights and who with great fatigue tilled these hills which rewarded but little produce. The path sometimes runs through Mediterranean bush and then suddenly opens onto a breathtaking view. We will visit places where still today there are “caprili” (refuges built with pieces of granite in the shape of an igloo) here goatherds stayed while pasturing their herds.
Excursion price: € 40 per person.
Route: Pomonte – La Terra – Mount di Cote – Mount Capanne – Mount Cenno – Mount Orlano – Pomonte
Distance: about 12 km.
Time: from 3 to 6 hours depending on the pace and degree of training.
Difficulty: Route suitable for fit people.
Interest: Historical, Naturalistic, Panoramic.
Departure: Pomonte beach.
Leaving from Pomonte beach after a few hundred metres we take a path which runs steeply up the valley, criss-crossing the village stream. The road clambers up on granite slabs, once upon a time it was used daily by local peasants to go to work. On arriving at “la Terra” we take footpath n° 10 called “la Scorcia” (shortcut) in 3 km it takes us to Elba’s second highest peak, Mount di Cote (950 m asl). From here we continue along the crest of the mountain until we get to Mount Capanne. A brief stop to admire the view and then down along another path taking us in a short time to Mal Passo crossroads, next we go down to Mount Cenno 625 m asl, Le Mure, the Walls in English (a high plateau so called because there are still the remains of the fortifications of an ancient highland town) and Mount Orlando. Here we find another crossroads and we take footpath n° 31 running through abandoned vineyards to bring us back to Pomonte.
